Finger-lickin’, lip-smackin’, melt in your mouth, fall off the bone, mmm-mmm good, thank you, sir, may I have another: there aren’t enough cliches to define the flavor and quality of Savannah’s home cookin’. I took Zach with me on my first visit. My son serves as my own personal ribs conny-sewer, and all he could say was, “Mmphhm. Mmphmh.” Don’t talk with your mouth full, Boy, and save some for me. A half rack came complete with 2 sides and cornbread. Charles tried to talk us into a full rack, and I regret now that he couldn’t.

Somehow we survived the trip home with the aroma filling the truck, tempting us to pull over and dig in right there on Ohio Street. Once we started eating, we were half-way through before I stopped to take a breath. “Oh, Lord, don’t let me die now, there’s still some meat left on those bones.” Too late, because by then I had tried the cornbread. “Someone call Momma B. and let her know her baby boy has died and gone to Heaven!” This was the finest southern meal I’ve ever had. Johnstown’s got ribs, and they’re good!

I’m not a roni guy, so Zak wolfed down his mac and cheese side. This time he didn’t mumble anything. Later on he’d tell me that it was just too good to talk. I’ll try (almost) anything once, so I went with the collard greens. I’ve never had greens before, so I have no comparison point, but these were firm and tasty. I liked them, and I won’t hesitate to order them again. All in all, it turned out to be an outrageous meal at a very reasonable price.

Emily had always wanted a daughter named Savannah, but a little girl wasn’t in the cards, so, when it came time to open a restaurant, Savannah was the obvious choice for a name. Charles and Emily are as gracious hosts as you’ll find in Johnstown, or anywhere. Soft-spoken, smiling and friendly, they remembered me on my second visit and even asked about Zach. (I had the fried chicken that time – same experience as the ribs.) Just meeting this charming, outgoing couple is well worth the price of a meal, and when you add the outstanding food to the mix, it’s an absolute bargain. I can’t wait to get back and try the brisket sandwich. I’ll let you know.
